Why Minimalism?
There is an old saying that says “sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know.” Knowing the right people can present opportunities that, regardless of how much knowledge you have in your brain, would never be placed in front of you if you did not know this one individual or a group of individuals. I can re-purpose this quote to fit the mindset change minimalism takes on; “it’s not what inspired you to start minimizing, it’s WHY you want to minimize.”
What do I mean by why? Well, why do we as people do anything? Some quick answers are because we enjoy the activity, because we have to (i.e go to work), for young kids because our parents said so. There are millions of reasons why we do things. Minimalism is the same way. You really want to find your reason(s) WHY you want to live a minimalistic lifestyle (and yes, minimalism is a lifestyle change). I have only one reason why I want to pursue a minimalist lifestyle, simplicity. Anyone that knows me or has ever been to my dwellings I’ve lived know that I do not like clutter. I hate it with a passion. I believe there is a spot for everything, and everything has a spot, and everything should be in its spot. No exceptions! Minimalism falls right in line with what I already believe and feel a living space should look like, but minimalism takes it a step further. Minimalism goes as far as to say if you own less things, it is easier to keep your spaces (offices, homes, desk, cars, etc) simple and tidy. You are able to appreciate the items that you own. On a deeper level, beyond material possessions, minimalism breaks us from the bond of consumerism, debt, mental fog, comparison and so on and so on. The freedom that comes with minimalism is endless.
Finding your WHY will be the reason(s) you continue down this path of minimalism. It can be one really strong reason or multiple reasons, but the important thing is you find your own reasons for WHY you want to minimize and let those reasons propel you. Understanding why, and not just what or how, will give you more conviction to stick with your decision and live your life this way. Your WHY ultimately defines the intentionality of everything that will remain in your life and everything new that you choose to bring in your life thereafter. Minimalism is not strictly confined to physical items, this includes relationships, content (visual, read, heard), ideas, technology, etc. Every area of your life can be subject to the intentionality of minimalism.
