PAPERS, PAPERS, EVERYWHERE
Something that grinds my gears is having stacks of papers everywhere. Papers in drawers. Papers on the counter. Papers on the desk. It seems like no matter where I look there are papers laying around. Receipts, mail, sticky notes, printed papers, and the list can go on and on. Another great reason to minimize is to help you gain control of the excess paper that manages to find its way into our homes.
EXISTING PAPER CLUTTER
I have created a flow chart to illustrate how I separate and handle paper.

PAPERS, PAPERS EVERYWHERE!!!
A few bullet points:
- The scanner I use is an Epson WorkForce ES-50.
- I typically save my documents to an external drive but saving it directly to your computer will also work. Another place to save your documents is to a cloud storage service such as Apple iCloud, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive to name a few.
- I understand there are certain documents that you may want to keep the physical copy on hand. The documents on this list should be very minimal. Examples of documents you should keep include birth certificates, social security cards, passports, life insurance papers, wills, etc.
- Start with one drawer/stack/corner/cabinet and find your rhythm.
- Once the stack has been divided, based on the flow chart, and appropriate action has occurred move to the next.
I will warn you this process can take a very long time because it requires that you physically handle each piece of paper so you can make the right decision about it. I found it easiest to focus on one area in the home at a time. Trying to tackle all the paper at once can seem daunting and overwhelming.
MAINTAIN PAPER CLUTTER
Once the existing paper clutter has been eliminated, we need to maintain any new paper that comes into the house. It is best to handle new paper as it comes into the house to avoid new piles from being created. Maintaining is the KEY habit that keeps you living like a minimalist. Ways to maintain paper clutter as it enters your home:
- Create a designated mail space in your house
- Touch the paper once -> once you have the paper in your hands, decide how to handle it. Does it need to be scanned, shredded, thrown away, or filed away?
- Receipts -> If you need to keep the receipt, file it away immediately. If you no longer need the receipt throw it out.
There is a purpose for everything, and everything has a purpose.
