Shelves
Some closets come equipped with built in shelves or you may have built a temporary shelf to hold more clothing items in what was an attempt to keep your closet organized. I was one of those people with built in temporary shelves in my closet that housed some of my shorts, shirts and shoes. This meant that since I was decluttering the clothes in my closet, I needed to go through these shelves. I used the same process as my previous posts: I determined what I no longer wore, what did not fit and what shoes I wore the most and got rid of the rest.
What I learned by going through this shelf (just the shelf alone) was all my shorts were too small and needed to be donated, all the T shirts I wore consistently were on this shelf, and not in my dresser drawer, and all the shoes I truly wore were on this shelf as well. Hmmm… that is weird. I had subconsciously arranged all the clothes I enjoyed wearing and liked wearing on this temporary shelf in my closet hidden underneath all of these items I did not wear. That makes no sense at all.
This is how many of our closets are set up today. We have a hoard of clothes, shoes, accessories, etc, but when it comes down to getting dressed for events, work, outings, vacations, relaxation or whatever event you can think of we navigate to the same set of items. Subconsciously we place the items we wear the most in an easily accessible place amongst the chaos that is our overstuffed closets in order to expedite the process of getting ready. So why not just have our “go to” items available to us WITHOUT ALL THE EXCESS IN THE WAY? That is minimalism at its finest.
I understand that there may be more items in your closet that are not clothes or shoes, or you have clothes that may have meaning for you (like wedding dresses or athletic memorabilia, etc) and we will discuss different ideas of what to do with those items as well. I imagine those items will be harder to part with as they may have more sentimental value and meaning to you. Since we are in the phase of gaining momentum, parting ways with sentimental items is not something we want to do right now, so we will circle back to these items. As we continue on our minimalistic journey, we will gain more understanding and knowledge in hopes that these items will be easier to part with at a later time.
What I have described in my shoes, clothes and shelves posts is what I follow to minimize the clothing areas in my living space.
There is a purpose for everything, and everything has a purpose.
